The Ocean Club Resort stood before her, a gleaming beacon of escape. As she checked in, her gaze wandered across the lobby—and that’s when she saw them. Pamela and Frank were casually browsing by the gift shop, alive and well, despite being dead in Miriam’s memory for years.
Miriam’s heart pounded as disbelief washed over her. She pushed through the lobby, her voice cracking as she called out, “Pamela!” Both Pamela and Frank froze, exchanging panicked glances before bolting toward the exit.
Miriam ran after them, yelling, “Stop, or I’ll call the police!” Her words halted them in their tracks. In a tense exchange back in their hotel room, the truth came out. They had faked their deaths after winning the lottery, seeking to escape the pressure and attention that came with the fortune.
Miriam couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “You faked your deaths… for money? You let me think you were dead for five years?” she asked, her voice trembling with disbelief.
Pamela, her eyes filled with guilt, tried to explain. “We didn’t mean to hurt you, Mom. We thought it would be easier this way. We wanted a fresh start.”
Frank, however, remained cold and unrepentant. “We had a chance to live the life we always wanted. We don’t owe anyone anything,” he said, his tone indifferent.
